Even when all hope seems lost, miracles can still happen. Just ask the Moore family, whose 4-month-old baby Lord survived a tornado in extraordinary circumstances. The baby was inside his bassinet when a tornado ripped through the roof of his parents' mobile home in Tennessee, picking up the child. Despite the terrifying scene, Lord was later found safe and sound.

“The tip of the tornado came down and picked up the bassinet with my baby, Lord, in it,” Sydney Moore, the boy's mother, told local news station WSMV. “He was the first thing to go up.” While Lord's father lunged to protect the baby in the bassinet, he ended up getting picked up by the tornado as well. “He was just holding onto the bassinet the whole time, and they went into circles, he said, and then they got thrown.”

As it all unfolded, the mom of two was holding onto her 1-year-old, Princeton. “Something in me just told me to run and jump on top of my son,” Moore explained. “Literally the moment I jumped on him, the walls collapsed.” Once the tornado passed, they were able to escape the rubble, and immediately started looking for Lord, worried about what might have happened to him.

Searching through the wreckage, they feared the worst. But then, they spotted a familiar sight—the bassinet, in what Moore described “like a little tree cradle.” Inside was baby Lord, with only minor cuts and bruises. “We are told that he looked like he was placed on the tree gently. Like an angel guided him safely to that spot,” wrote Moore's sister Caitlyn.

Once the family was reunited, it came time to make sense of their surroundings. Their home and car were completely destroyed. While the mom and her children only had minor injuries, the father had a broken arm and shoulder. While their renters have put them up in a hotel for a month, the family has lost everything. To get them on their feet again, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched by Moore's sister.

“Sydney and her family would like to purchase a home, as you can imagine this has been extremely traumatizing for everyone involved so they do not feel comfortable living in a trailer again,” she explains, adding that the family will need furnishings, vehicle insurance, and baby supplies. The fundraiser has happily met its goal, but you can still make a donation via GoFundMe.

Not many history teachers have first-hand experience of their subject matter. However, one educator in Southern California is able to share his stories from living through the Great Depression, offering a personal perspective on many events that we are accustomed to only reading about. Gene Arnold is a 95-year-old World War II veteran who turned to teaching after returning from overseas, and has no plans to retire as a substitute anytime soon.

Arnold was born in the late 1920s, just as the Roaring 20s came to a close and the Great Depression began. It was a difficult period to live through, and for many, finding food was not easy. There also weren't as many services available to students at schools. “We didn't have the cafeteria like you do now,” he tells his students. “Kids either brought their lunch, or they didn't eat.”

Following the Great Depression, Arnold enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II. Upon leaving the service, he chose to work in education—a field that he remains passionate about to this day. “I felt and still feel that there's a big need for people to be in the classroom, people who want to be there,” he says. The fact that he is able to recall from many of his lived experiences lets him talk in depth about certain points of history. “Well you say, how do you remember that? I'm old!” he laughs. “Old people remember things that happened a long time ago, but we can't remember what we did this morning.”

While many things have changed between the early 1900s and today, Arnold is still able to relate to his students in many ways, especially in regards to recent challenges that came along with the pandemic. Eighth grader Luke Scalero says: “He understands us, and he can relate to us, because he went to school in a dark time too. And we were around during COVID and he was too.”

Arnold's long life and varied experiences is proof that we can all learn from history.

LEGO bricks are one of the most beloved toys by kids around the world. Known for their simple design, these tiny plastic bricks can foster infinite creative possibilities. Unfortunately, because of their price tag, they can be just out of reach for kids in underserved communities. Aware of how these toys can inspire and inform children in the long run, a teenager named Charlie Jeffers created Pass the Bricks, a project that collects, cleans, and packaged new building sets with the repurposed blocks, which are then donated to kids who otherwise wouldn't have access to them.

“I believe that every kid deserves access to play and learning tools, and no one does that better than LEGO,” Jeffers states. To achieve this, he gathers LEGO bricks from around his community in Northern California. He then washes, sanitizes, sorts, and reassembles them into “new” sets, which are then redistributed by organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs, the Bay Area Crisis Nursery, and Refugee and Immigrant Transitions. His efforts have even had international reach, with some of his sets being distributed in Ecuador with the help of a neighbor.

Jeffers' endeavor also presents a sustainable practice. LEGO bricks are made of sturdy plastic, which means they are high quality and durable; however, many blocks and sets end up in landfills once their owner disposes of them. By turning the collected pieces into new sets, he gives them a second life, reducing the amount of plastic waste in his community.

This is all with the priceless help of 22 volunteer builders, who put their creativity to work to come up with fun and appealing designs, such as Spider-Man catching a bad guy or Chewbacca on a waterskiing adventure. Aware that every kid has different needs and abilities, the team has created compelling sets with as little as 14 blocks, and complex models such as a 196-piece orange motorcycle. Jeffers then photographs and packs each set in a white box, which is decorated by an image of the assembled set. As a result, kids get the experience of opening a brand new toy.

So far, Pass the Bricks has collected over 900 pounds of LEGO bricks and turned them into over 3,000 sets that have been donated. The teams goal is to launch Pass the Bricks program in 10 cities, while continuing to collect bricks and deliver LEGO sets to kids.

Like so many animals today, Saharan antelope are severely threatened. However, a recent announcement offers a glimmer of hope for their future. The scimitar horned oryx—which can be identified by its long, arched horns and white-and-brown face—has been brought back from the brink of extinction. After previously being labeled extinct in the wild in 2000 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, rigorous conservation efforts have led to its status being downgraded to endangered.

This amazing turnaround was made possible by the Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD), supported by the Zoological Society of London. After two decades, there have been 510 scimitar horned oryx calves born in Chad's Ouadi Rimé, at the Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve. “At a time when biodiversity is being lost at unprecedented rates, the return of the scimitar horned oryx can give us hope for other species whose fate is—quite literally—in our hands,” says Dr. Andrew Terry, director of conservation and policy at the Zoological Society of London. “To have the fate of the flagship species for the initiative dramatically reversed proves the potential for the other species surviving only in zoos and reinforces the need for urgent support from funders and policy makers.”

The comeback of the scimitar horned oryx also underlines the importance of collaboration among organizations and governments to help protect and reestablish rare animal populations. “Projects like the scimitar horned oryx show that reversing the fate of these species is possible—we just need to be able to give the same resource and commitment to the other Extinct in the Wild species that survive only under human care,” adds Professor John Ewen. Hopefully, the fortune of the scimitar horned oryx will continue into the future, and lead the way for more species to rebound in their natural habitats.

The scimitar horned oryx, which was previously extinct in the wild, has been brought back from the brink of extinction through rigorous conservation efforts.

Grief is different for everyone. Many people going through mourning wish they could have another word with their loved ones. That was certainly the case for 10-year-old Matilda Handy. After losing both of her grandparents within a span of five years, she had an idea for a “postbox to heaven,” so she could continue to write letters to her grandmother and grandfather even after they passed. Now, Matilda's inspiring proposal is being adopted across cemeteries in the UK so that others can continue to talk to those who have moved on.

The first postbox to heaven was installed at the Gedling Crematorium in Matilda's native Nottingham. Her mother, Leanne, asked for permission to put up the mailbox, and the staff was enthusiastic about the idea. So, an old post box was refurbished with white paint and gold lettering, along with a plaque that reads “Letters to Heaven” in elegant cursive script. “Matilda was the first person to put a message in our first memorial post box at Gedling last December,” Leanne says. This idea had extra meaning to their family as Matilda's grandmother worked at the post office. “We had no idea then that, one year later, there would be a memorial post box at every one of Westerleigh Group's sites—bringing comfort to people all over the country.”

Soon after Matilda dropped off her envelope, another 100 letters were added to the post box in the first week alone. The ability to reach out to loved ones in a tactile way brought comfort to many people. The idea soon spread to far-off parts of the world as well. “I am so thankful that our post boxes are able to help not just me and my friends and family, but people all over the UK and as far away as Australia,” says Matilda.

Westerleigh Group, the owners of Gedling Crematorium and one of the largest independent owners of crematoria and cemeteries in the UK, is dedicated to adding memorial post boxes to all of its sites. “We've received so much incredibly positive feedback from people who tell us they have gained therapeutic benefit and comfort,” adds Debbie Smith, CEO of Westerleigh Group. The post boxes are most often filled around the holidays, when the presence of late loved ones is most greatly missed. Matilda has even sent a letter to King Charles about putting up a white and gold post box near Buckingham Palace for people to send letters to royal figures like the late Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana.

Seeing how much comfort this idea has brought will hopefully inspire more memorial mailboxes to crop up in cemeteries around the world.

Losing a loved one is difficult for anyone. The grief of not having that person around anymore is unquantifiable. This can be especially difficult for children.

Some owners accessorize their pets to protect them from the elements or to simply add a little style to their look. But for a chicken named Nubz and his human, Meesh Davignon, the tiny shoes he wears around his home are so much more. After the chicken lost his toes, Davignon noticed he had trouble walking on hard surfaces. She wondered if giving him a pair of little dog boots would make a difference. Not only did they vastly improve things for Nubz, but they also turned him into a style icon.

Davignon, a dog walker from California, adopted Nubz when he was dealing with leg scale mites, the arachnoid parasites that ate up his toes. After nursing him back to health, a deep bond was forged between the two, and Nubz—a name in reference to his shortened toes—was welcomed into the family, which also includes dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and 11 other chickens.

The dog boots, which Davignon's smallest pooch never used, took Nubz a while to get used to. In the end, though, they have worked wonders. “As he got more comfortable wearing his little shoes, I’d leave them on longer each time,” Davignon told The Washington Post. “Pretty soon, he was getting around a lot better than he did without them because they were great little mobility devices. I’d let him wear them to walk on wood chips and anything else that was rough on his feet.”

His boots were a massive success, turning him into a viral video star. Davignon has been open about Nubz's journey, showing him getting around in his wheelchair and addressing his health scares. Moved by Nubz's strength, his followers asked Davignon if they could send him some shoes for his collection.

As a result, Nubz was sent over 60 pairs of shoes, from bright yellow sandals and purple crocs to Converse sneakers and holiday boots. “I haven’t counted his shoes in months and thought it was more like 30,” she said. “I haven’t had to buy him a single pair because people keep sending them.” Despite the variety he now has access to, his favorite seem to be a pair of dark blue shoes that look like Ugg boots. “He’s pretty fast in those,” his human admits, “and seems to really enjoy wearing them.”

Overall, Davignon is thrilled to hear about the happiness her little chicken has brought into the lives of people around the world. She is also immensely grateful for the fans who have gone so far as to send him gifts or even pitch in for his hospital bills. Davignon says, “They’ve been a great blessing—it’s surreal to have so many people love my tiny little chicken.”

The internet has brought a lot of good things into our lives. But sadly, it has also allowed people to hide behind a faceless avatar to make comments they wouldn't say out loud. Leslie Horton, a Canadian news anchor, has been a victim of this. But not willing to take it anymore, she decided to speak up on air about a harmful message that she had gotten earlier that day.

Horton, a 59-year old reporter for Global TV Calgary, got an email after one of her morning traffic updates. It read, “Congratulations on your pregnancy. If you’re going to wear old bus driver pants, you can expect emails like this.” While hosts are not supposed to address the mean comments they get, this wasn't the first time this person had body shamed Horton. And so, she chose to bring attention to the subject during her following segment.

“He’s reached out several times over the years, and his intent is always to humiliate and hurt me,” Horton told Today.  “We’re not supposed to respond to trolls—so I had no plans to address it, but then the words just came out of my mouth. I had this visceral reaction.”

After relaying the message to the viewers, she said, “No, I’m not pregnant. I actually lost my uterus to cancer last year, and this is what women my age look like,” the reporter said while speaking directly into the camera. “So, if it’s offensive to you, that is unfortunate. Think about the emails you send.”

Horton identified the sender as a regular viewer. This means that they must be aware that she fought endometrial cancer, which resulted in a radical hysterectomy, since she informed her audience back in 2020 and had regular health updates on the show. In the end, Horton’s defying moment was met with an outpouring of support, with many reaching out on Twitter to praise her for her speaking up and delivering such a powerful response in a matter of seconds.

“Maybe I was responding to the pregnancy, no uterus, cancer thing,” Horton said. “Or maybe it’s just the fact that I’m tired female broadcasters—and women in general—are being treated this way. And I would say it hit a nerve because I’ve received thousands of messages from people—men and women—saying, ‘Good for you. This is not right and it needs to stop.’ ”

During a live broadcast, Canadian news anchor Leslie Horton addressed a body shaming message she had gotten earlier that day.

“This is what women my age look like,” the reporter said. “So, if it’s offensive to you, that is unfortunate. Think about the emails you send.”

In the end, Horton’s defying moment was met with an outpouring of support, with many reaching out on Twitter to praise her for her speaking up.

The red carpet is often a space for celebrities to present utmost glamour. And while this usually means high couture, it is also expected for women to show up with a full face of makeup. Recently, Pamela Anderson decided to subvert this assumption, attending upscale events with a makeup-free look. In doing so, the 56-year-old actress sent an inspiring message to women from all walks of life.

Her latest makeup-free appearance took place at the 2023 Fashion Awards Red Carpet, where she donned an an all-white ensemble with her hair pulled back in a ponytail. With these fashion choices, her natural look took center stage.

This comes a few months after Anderson debuted her no-makeup look at the high-stakes Paris Fashion Week. “I don't know, something just kind of came over me, and I was dressing in these beautiful clothes, and I thought, ‘I don't want to compete with the clothes. I'm not trying to be the prettiest girl in the room.' I feel like it's just freedom. It's a release,” she said in an interview with Vogue.

While going to that first event with no make up on made her a little uneasy, the feeling rapidly faded. “It felt a bit like jumping off a bridge, but I just smiled. And when I got home from the show, that’s when I decided I wanted to go makeup free the entire week,” she said. Her choice was then praised by other celebrities, like Jamie Lee Curtis, who wrote, “This woman showed up and claimed her seat at the table with nothing on her face. I am so impressed and floored by this act of courage and rebellion.”

As if challenging this wasn't tough on its own, Anderson is aware that her age would put extra scrutiny on her. “I feel as a woman and a woman of my age, and a woman in the public eye… it's also your job to be a model of everything. Just all sorts of choices. So I am just being me, kind of who I am, in all these great clothes running around Paris,” she added.

For all the constant messaging on social media about how women are supposed to look and  what they are expected to do to achieve that, Anderson's message is not only inspiring, but also liberating. “I know I wasn’t making strides toward world peace, but I was making a statement,” Anderson noted in an interview. “I just thought, ‘I’m doing this for all the girls out there.’ I’ve had stepdaughters in past relationships and my sons have girlfriends, and this was for them. In this day and age, do we even know what a face looks like anymore? This is it.”

Pamela Anderson has been challenging expectations by attending upscale events and red carpets with a makeup-free look.

Bringing an animal into your life is a longterm commitment. But along with the responsibility is the possibility of an incomparably love and a long-lasting bond. One woman named Caitlin Doran has shared a special 22-year friendship with her pet tortoise named Tiptoe, and shows what their daily livea together looks like with her thousands of followers.

Doran, who is based in Los Angeles, received Tiptoe as a Christmas present when she was 7 years old. At the time, he was about the size of a strawberry and could easily fit in her palm. However, with love and care, the African tortoise grew immensely, finally reaching a healthy 175 pounds. The pair have been inseparable through all of the ups and downs in Doran's life. “I had a difficult childhood. My parents did the best they could with what they knew. But some big signs were missed,” Doran says. “I felt like nobody could hear me, but Tiptoe was always here.”

The animal lover affirms, “I love my animals. I got them all at significant times in my life when I needed a friend.” Tiptoe helped Doran through her mom's cancer diagnosis, and coping with the pressures of adulthood. Just before COVID-19, Doran quit her job. It was during this time that she began sharing videos of Tiptoe on social media. “I focused all my energy on my animals. Tiptoe in particular. Something about him brings my mind to a hault. We go on walks, spend time in the sun and eat healthy food. He helps me slow down and smell the roses. He is everything.”

In these videos, Doran highlights what a tortoise lifestyle is like. Tiptoe receives regular walks around the neighborhood—a mile takes him about 40 minutes in total—and has plenty of social interaction with people and other animals. Doran's most viewed content, however, features the yummy and colorful food she feeds Tiptoe. This ranges from a simple flower or a piece of cactus to a platter of fresh fruits and veggies. Whatever is on the menu, Tiptoe always looks delighted with his snacks.

Greenland is the largest island in the world. Yet, despite its prominent presence on the world map, most people know very little about its culture and the people who call this remote place home. This inspired a Greenlandic woman named Qupanuk to share and teach the world about life in Greenland through a series of insightful videos. Her channel, Q's Greenland, is a one-stop-shop to know everything about the country, from its traditional food to its unique language.

While many associate Greenland with remoteness and frigid temperatures, Qupanuk—or Q, as she is known—always takes the time to note that “life is amazing” there in her videos. On top of posting every day about what makes Greenland such a unique place, she is the country's first and only mining engineer and mother of four. Originally from Qaqortoq, in Southern Greenland, she currently lives Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland, which has a population of under 20,000.

Her channel's name, Q's Greenland, is a reference to the fact that we're only seeing Greenland through her eyes. Even so, Q's deep understanding of the country and her charming personality make her the perfect teacher of this lesser-known place. She addresses all kinds of topics through her content, ranging from how hot summers get, to how much it costs to go grocery shopping there.

Although Greenland appears very remote, Q also highlights the ways it is connected to the rest of the world.  For example, she addresses what it means for her to hold Danish citizenship–as Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Additionally, she explains what it is like to have a front-row seat to the effects of climate change, as global warming has made the weather of Greenland much more unpredictable.

Whether it is a tour around Nuuk's tallest buildings—which are only 12 stories tall!— or a quick Greenlandic lesson, Q has painted a compelling picture of the most fascinating aspects of her home, becoming almost like an ambassador of the country to the rest of the world.
